THURM HOUSE ADDITION
|
BRONXVILLE, NY
This project shows the second of two house additions, successive addenda on a 1920's era colonial house, in a northern subrub of New York City. The first, completed in 1996, uses a system of diagonal columns to support a shed roof, housing a new kitchen and dining room. The second, completed in 2002, is a family room projecting into the rear garden, accessible through a bridge from the main level. Passage under the bridge at the rear of the house creates a functional hidden lower court and allows circulation to the deck of the initial addition. The new room has a white painted plywood and batten exterior and a cherry plywood and batten interior. The radial structural joists are supported on individual columns at the exterior and by a shallow kingpost truss at their nexus, at the center of the room. |
