SCHOOL IN HAITI

The basic component of this school is the classroom for forty students.  Each classroom is identical: concrete block wall perimeter; covered central enclosure; open, planted areas on either side for light and ventilation.  Split or "Dutch" doors mediate the light and air entering the classroom and provide security. Classrooms are arranged back-to-back, offset to assure maximum privacy.  The classroom unit is also used for administrative and teachers' offices, restrooms, dining, kitchen, and storage areas, to provide maximum flexibility as the complex grows.  Larger spaces - an auditorium seating 2,000, large lecture halls and teaching laboratories - are created with long spanning beams added to the basic module. Circulation takes place outdoors, in paved gardens, partially covered with concrete-slab roofs.
