The Kaplen Loft is designed as a continuous field to be appreciated by all the senses. In cold weather, heat is continuously radiated from a floor made up of irregularly shaped bluestone. In warm weather, cooling air streams down noislessly from a perforated ceiling. At dusk, the circular openings in the ceiling also provide an even, indirect method of illumination. Walls which must occupy the areas inside the rings are stopped at the 7’-0” height, in order to allow the ring space to remain uninterrupted. The walls above 7’-0” are fabricated with a system of plexiglass “boxes”, which are airtight and illuminated from below, within the walls.Doors are fabricated of 1/4” stress-skin panels. Doors and all miscellaneous cabinetry are cyprus with an oil finish.
