BOIGON ADDITION II |
HARRISON, NY
This house addition replaced the existing one designed and built in 1994. A growing family required two new living spaces: one at the level of the existing ground floor, and the other, below it. The elevated height of the ground floor level allows clerestory windows to illuminate the living space below. This effect is exaggerated in the new addition by allowing the clerestories to gather extra light from counter height “light scoops” which are within the space above. A checkerboard pattern organizes the façade, as well as the ceiling, into areas of solid and void. The continuous array is a way to create a continuous screening effect, for privacy. A secondary pattern of materials is created with stucco, glass, and stone. This is an intentional reference to the materials employed in the host structure. |
